The Beaver Falls Community Development Corporation invited czb to the Beaver River Valley northwest of Pittsburgh to chart a new revitalization course for their city of 8,400 residents. Having lost 52% of its population due to the collapse of the steel economy and suburbanization, Beaver Falls was stuck in a self-reinforcing cycle of disinvestment and declining standards.

Working with the CDC and its enthusiastic volunteers, czb analyzed the city’s market conditions, identified critical assets, and designed a strategy to focus scarce resources in ways likely to build confidence, pride, and the community’s willingness to invest in itself.
