City leaders met on Monday Feb. 1 in partnership with GVLtoday for a time capsule burial ceremony to celebrate the city’s GVL 2040 comprehensive plan.

“We saw just about every obstacle imaginable in 2020, but we used this as a good opportunity to pause and think about the future,” said Mayor Knox White.

The comprehensive plan, a copy of which was buried in the time capsule, aims to meet the demands of a growing population while preserving the city’s unique neighborhoods and culture.

Other items buried in the time capsule include: a drawing from local elementary school students, a hospital respirator mask, a VESper device for COVID-19 ventilators (a device that allows ventilators to be split between two patients), paw prints of the baby leopards from the Greenville Zoo, a sample 2020 election ballot, “Six Feet Apart” floor stickers, a black lives matter banner, a “Be The Bridge” poster, a photo of the massive mural on College Street, a Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail map, a piece of granite excavated from Renewable Water Resources’ Big Dig tunnel, a copy of GVLtoday, a local food menu, a 2020 census form, COVID-19 face masks, a signed jersey from the Greenville Triumph, and, lastly, a roll of toilet paper commemorating the strangeness of 2020.
