Moving Klondike Forward

Master Plan for the revitalization of Klondike

Klondike Neighborhood, Memphis, TN

CAN A LONG NEGLECTED, VERY POOR, URBAN NEIGHBORHOOD BE REVITALIZED WITHOUT DISPLACEMENT?

SUMMARY

Klondike is a North Memphis neighborhood with a low home ownership rate (25%), a high poverty rate (>50%), and in the line of sight of the city’s fast growing Crosstown neighborhood. Among the oldest African American neighborhoods in the city, residents face real displacement risk even as the concurrent challenge of being by-passed by prosperity also looms.

czb worked with the Klondike Partnership —The Works, Inc., Neighborhood Preservation, Inc., ComCap Partners, and the Pyramid Peak Foundation and with the community to craft this master plan for Klondike’s inclusive revitalization. This effort, when successful, will make Memphis and Klondike pioneers in the reclamation and rebirth of neglected urban neighborhoods in the U.S.

Engaging the community

The project website provided an opportunity for the public to learn about key issues, and to learn of upcoming open houses and community meetings to add their voice to the conversation.

Input from the in-person Open Houses were used to inform the development of policy guidance and strategies.

Strategies guided by community input

Community engagement efforts informed the Master Plan for the Revitalization of Klondike which will guide strategic investments in the Klondike neighborhood for years to come.
