Española: BeyonD Boundaries

City of Española, NM

how can a remote small town become the best possible version of itself?

SUMMARY

czb was retained to write a new comprehensive plan for this remote city in New Mexico where economic development and preservation of the city’s unique community character were clear priorities. Community engagement played a critical role in Española, due to the close-knit nature of the community and the diverse interests, which included two separate native American tribes.

Community-Wide Survey and Committee Meetings

The community survey, included in utility statements to residents and businesses, was made available on the city's website in English and Spanish to capture a diversity of voices and perspectives.

More than 230 surveys were completed, representing almost 6% of the city's households.

"These planners came in not with the idea of laying their good ideas on anybody, but they went to great lengths to listen to as many people as they could."

- Satguru Khalsa | STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBER

APA 2018 AWARD
